What Is ‘Smart Manufacturing’?
Smart: (adj.) Having or showing a quick-witted intelligence.
When you look at the definition of the word smart, most will focus upon the synonym, intelligence, and for good reason.
In today’s economic standard, smart means developing your business and finding the most cost-effective, yet efficient, methods
of running your shop floor. Being ‘smart’ is all about saving the two most important things in any business: time & money.
With technology advancing in such leaps and bounds, we need to do our best to remain competitive; whether that means revamping
our product line, coming out with something completely new, or, more simply, upgrading our software/hardware needs to give us
a technological advantage.
Smart manufacturers, not only see the opportunities in front of them, but, more importantly, see what lies ahead. Wayne Gretzky,
a hall of fame NHL hockey player once said, “A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey player plays where the
puck is going to be.” This holds true in manufacturing innovation. Great manufacturing companies plan successes for their future
and are able to adapt if/when obstacles or opportunities arise.
